Socialist to run for UNISON General Secretary

ROGER BANNISTER, member of our sister organisation, the Socialist Party in England, is running for the position of UNISON general secretary. Roger is currently seeking nominations from UNISON branches.

He is standing on the slogan "A fighting general secretary on a worker's wage" and is the only candidate demanding that UNISON severs its links with New Labour.

Other candidates, including the current general secretary, Dave Prentis, are clearly identified as pro-Labour.

Roger says: "We should no longer be giving money and support to a party that is attacking our members' jobs and the services we provide."

In the last election in 2000, Roger got over 71,000 votes, nearly 32%. We encourage UNISON members in Northern Ireland to move a nomination for Roger through their branch and to get involved in his election campaign.

Closing date for nominations is 10 December.
