Immigrant workers - "Will the Taoiseach stand up to Gama?"

In today's Leader's Questions, Joe Higgins once again rasied the issue of the brutal exploitation of GAMA's Turkish workforce - including GAMA's latest attempts to deny food and accommodation to the very workers whom GAMA had spent the past four to five years ripping off. The Taoiseach was his usual evasive self.

(26/04/05) GAMA Scandal: Attempt to starve workers into submission GAMA management has stopped providing food to workers at its Ballymun site who are on a work stoppage. This brutal attempt to try and force workers into submission is reminiscent of the tactics of William Martin Murphy and the ruthless Dublin employers when they tried to break trade unionism in the 1913 Lockout.

CWI members in countries across Europe organised lobbies outside Turkish embassies last Friday to protest against the vicious exploitation of workers in Ireland who are employed by the Turkish based multinational GAMA construction. We carry two reports from Belgium and Sweden.

According to a report in today's Irish Examiner, the scandal racked Turkish firm GAMA Construction is to send some 140 workers back to Turkey - this despite the Government saying that there would be no forced repatriation .
